Casement Windows
Casement windows are crank-operated windows that swing open on a horizontal plane. They utilize either a pivot or egress to "hinge" one side to the frame. The window is sealed with a rubber gasket, and when the lock pulls the window into the frame, it is one of the best-sealed windows on the market.

Benefits of Casement Windows
- When the window is brand new and for 10 years after, it’s easier to open when compared to a single-hung window. This is very good for those with disabilities or the elderly. But like everything, with time, it wears down and becomes a little more difficult to open.
- The view is much better with casement windows. Since there is no bar in the middle of the window, it allows for better visibility and more light when compared to a double-hung window.
- Casement windows are excellent for air flow. The window catches the air as it “runs” around the exterior of the house from outside and channels fresh air inside (like a scoop or blade).
- These windows are very well sealed, since the lock pulls the window into a rubber gasket.
Awning & Hopper Window Variations
If you tip a casement window on its side, so the window opens out from the bottom to the top, this is considered an awning window. They will use the same cranks, but the direction of the window is better for deflecting rain and mounting in spaces where vertical space is limited. Awnings can also be installed at the top or bottom of picture windows for better airflow and ventilation in a room.
Hoppers are awning windows, but located in a basement. Hoppers usually have clips and just pull open, instead of utilizing cranks.
