CASE STUDY: Major Roofing Job in White Bear Lake
Last summer we had a large roofing project for a beautiful home on the peninsula of White Bear Lake. This job was part of a large-scale remodel and addition being handled by a local builder. Due to the complexity of the remodel, the architect provided detailed specifications for how the roof had to be installed. Every aspect of the project demanded custom solutions, from the choice of shingles to the installation of specialized components.

Problem
This project posed several challenges:
- Architectural requirements
- Site location
- Roof safety
Architectural Requirements
The main architect handed us a set of very detailed and specific requirements he was looking for with the project. Our project manager had to stay on top of this and clearly communicate standards to the crew members.
Site Location
Since we were working on the peninsula, our project manager had to coordinate materials, equipment, and crew access.
Roof Safety Concerns
Steep roof pitches and complex roof lines created some hazards for the crew.
Solution
Our team worked closely with the builder and architect throughout the project to ensure that every detail was to spec.
Custom Shingles & Flashing
The homeowner selected GAF Camelot shingles, which have a nice look and are known for being durable. These shingles have a high-end, “slate” look, which requires care during handling and installation. Custom-bend flashing tins were ordered for the project to meet the architect’s specific requirements and ensure seamless integration with the rest of the home. Our crew followed the exact installation instructions in the shingle manual.
Other Roofing Systems
- EPDM Flat Roof: Certain sections of the home featured flat roof areas that required an EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) membrane. EPDM is a highly durable synthetic rubber roofing membrane that provides excellent protection against the elements, especially in areas prone to water pooling.
- Metal Pans: For some roof areas that had unique architectural features, we installed custom-fabricated metal pans. These pans were designed to fit with the intricate roof lines and provide additional durability in areas prone to heavy water flow.
Gutters
We installed seamless gutters to fit with the roof’s design. Proper water management was a big concern for the builder and architect, given the home’s proximity to the lake. The gutter design is meant to channel water away from the structure – protecting the home’s foundation and landscaping.
Result
The end result is a protected home and a happy homeowner. Our project manager and crew were able to handle this multi-faceted architectural endeavor and completed the following:
- Met all requirements from the architect and builder
- Roofing materials were installed to the manufacturer’s specifications
- Crew installed the roof without injuries
- Full cleanup was completed
Our team was happy to complete this project and thankful it went so well!
